History Of Las Vegas


Las Vegas is like heaven on earth. It is amazing that how people keep thinking about what is going on in the city. The city has actually been the centre of more stipulation than any other city in the world. There are all kinds of fun present in Las Vegas right from grand hotels, resorts, pools, golf, casinos, entertainment shows both for family and for adult. Many things seem very unrealistic. It is also the base of some of the famous studios of Hollywood and a famous vacation spot for celebrities. Many flock the city in search of fame and fortune while many others just for a thrilling vacation.

As any other city Las Vegas has a history, however we are not sure whether we can call it a rich one. Las Vegas is situated in the state of Nevada, United States. The city has a population well over 2 million. Las Vegas is a Spanish term for 'The Meadows'. The city is situated in a valley full of meadows. Antonio Armijo, a Mexican trader who was searching for a route to Los Angeles in 1829, found the place. The place remained little known until it became a permanent dwelling for Mormon missionaries from Salt Lake City in 1854.

William Clark was a US senator from Montana. He bought the rights for the Mormon settlement in 1902. Along with it, he also bought 2,000 acres of land and water rights. He built a railroad to Las Vegas. He dreamed of developing a town there. The city of Las Vegas was officially founded in the year 1905 but got incorporated in 1911. The Las Vegas got its first casino in 1920 that opened on Fremont Street.

Meanwhile the government was planning to make use of the springs available in the valley. Therefore, the government passed the orders for building Hoover Dam with a budget to the tune of $70 million. Las Vegas suddenly had a boom and people started pouring in looking for jobs as it was the time of depression in America.

Although the first casino had opened there but the anti-gambling laws were quite strict. It was not before 1931 when the state of Nevada legalized gambling there. The workers of the Hoover Dam used to come down to the city of Vegas for entertainment and gambling was a big part of it.

However, it was after World War II that Las Vegas developed it's reputation as the fun-filled ‘Sin City'. Hotels, resorts, casinos and other entertainment business became the main source of employment. Wealthy businessmen also had a big hand in making the city of Vegas what it is today. The huge investments were made in building and developing the Las Vegas strip, one thing that has amazed everybody until. Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian was instrumental in the development of the city as in 1968 he opened the biggest hotel in the world at that time, the International Hotel.

Since then Las Vegas has been beaming with beauty and fun astonishing the tourists from all over the world. It has also become the centre of illegal mob and fun activities. Then who cares when you are there to visit the heaven on earth.
